Staycations on the Rise: Edmontonians Rediscover Their City

With travel costs soaring and global uncertainty still fresh in memory, many Edmontonians are opting to explore their own backyard instead. Staycations—once considered a second-rate alternative—are now the preferred way for residents to relax, recharge, and reconnect with their city on a deeper level.

Boutique hotels like The Varscona and JW Marriott report increased bookings from locals celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, or simply looking for a break from routine. 'We’re seeing people who live ten blocks away check in for a weekend escape,' said hotel manager Clara Liu. 'They want luxury without the hassle of travel.'

Edmonton Tourism has leaned into the trend, launching seasonal campaigns like 'Explore Edmonton Like a Tourist' and offering curated itineraries for different personality types—foodie, adventurer, history buff, or family fun seeker. The initiative has helped boost weekday museum attendance and off-season walking tours.

One popular route takes guests from a river valley hike to Indigenous art exhibits at the AGA, followed by a late lunch at a downtown eatery and a stargazing session atop the Muttart Conservatory. 'You don’t realize how much your city has to offer until you string it all together,' said local guide Renée Torres.

Families are also turning staycations into learning opportunities. Hands-on experiences like Fort Edmonton Park’s time-travel programs or the TELUS World of Science’s summer STEM camps offer interactive fun that entertains and educates. 'It beats sitting in traffic with cranky kids,' laughed parent Jarod McCall.

For couples, it’s about romance without airports. Rooftop dining, spa treatments, and wine tastings at local vineyards near the city’s edge are all part of a growing industry catering to in-town escapists. Some hotels even offer 'disconnect packages' that encourage screen-free stays with book bundles and guided meditation apps.

Solo staycationers are embracing the trend too. Mental health experts say local getaways offer similar benefits to travel without the stress of planning or jet lag. 'It's a form of self-care that’s achievable and immediate,' said psychologist Dr. Alina Fedor.

Even Edmonton’s transit system is adapting, with promotional weekend passes that encourage residents to hop between neighborhoods like Old Strathcona, Alberta Avenue, and Oliver—each with its own flair and offerings.

Small businesses are reaping the benefits. Local artisans, food vendors, and tour operators say Edmontonians are spending more intentionally, choosing to invest their leisure dollars close to home. 'It’s made us feel seen by our own community,' said boutique owner Nancy Jo at City Market Downtown.

Social media has played a role too. Influencers and content creators have begun spotlighting hyperlocal adventures, from retro bowling alleys to sunrise yoga on hotel rooftops. Their posts inspire followers to try similar low-cost escapes.

As the concept of travel continues to evolve, Edmonton’s staycation boom is proving that discovery doesn’t always require departure. Sometimes, wonder is just around the corner—or at least within city limits.
